| 2005 Dong Proverb Calendar | |
|
The Dong Proverb Calendar has been created by the staff at the Guizhou University Southwest Minority Language and Culture Institute to encourage literacy in the Dong language by providing daily exposure to the language in a written form.
The weekly calendar was made for the Dong people, but the sales to foreign groups will help keep the price as low as possible for the Dong people and will help support similar calendars in following years. |
|
Each week is represented by an original drawing representing the traditional Dong proverb written in Dong, Chinese, and English. Here, the English translation reads, "Don't be proud when others praise you, and don't be bitter when they admonish you."
Foreign sales of these calendars serves a two-fold purpose. One, it supports the efforts to raise the literacy awareness of the Dong people. Two, though not intentionally made for this purpose, it provides those who are not Dong a wonderful insight into Dong culture through their proverbs: this insight helps us understand who the Dong are and what they see to be the key issues in their culture. |
